Artist Statement

Art, for me, is an attempt to convey to others that they are loved. Whether you believe in a Divine presence or not, nature and beauty can still resonate in your soul and stir in you some sense of your belovedness. My hope is that my art can create spaces and moments where people will pause and connect with that sense of being loved. To be reassured that it's all going to be okay.

The subject matter I focus on is landscapes, with special preference given to skies. Some people are wonderfully gifted in rendering humans and animals. That is not my gift. I will sometimes include small silhouettes, but I keep figures as a minor element in my paintings.

My style is somewhere between Contemporary Realism and Painterly Realism. I like to create paintings that look as close to my reference photos as possible. I suppose that my limitations in imitating what I see is what makes my "style."

There is a lot I am still exploring. I am trying out both small scale and large scale paintings, experimenting with colours and layers, as well as glazes. Perhaps one of these days I'll even venture into the world of adding textures to my work. For now, I paint mostly with acrylics, but I want to try gouache and oils as well. What excites me is that there are so many possibilities and that I can continually develop my skills. I feel like I'm just getting started.

I'd Love to Hear from You!
