Pricing

One of the most common questions I get is how much my work costs. Whether it is a made-to-order commissioned piece, or a collectors piece that I have created and am selling through a store or a gallery, I strive to keep my pricing fair.

[NOTE: I am currently booking commissions for Summer/Fall 2024.]

Commissioned Artwork

A commission is when you have an idea and we work together to help you bring that idea to life. Maybe you have a space on your dining room wall you want to fill. Or your parents' 40th anniversary is coming up and you want to give them a unique gift. Perhaps your company has a client you want to extend special appreciation to. Or maybe your family has all pitched in and given you a birthday gift of a piece of your choosing.

First we will chat about the size and image you want, as well as your budget and I'll work with you to meet those criteria. We will also talk about the type of canvas you want; whether you're planning to frame it or not. Generally, I paint on either slim profile canvases (3/4" deep) or deep canvases (1 1/2" deep). Slim ones look better framed while deep ones can be either framed or unframed.

My strengths are skies with some landscape elements. I'm not as competent painting humans and animals, so I don't really do those unless the figures are small and a minor feature in your picture.

I try not to duplicate past paintings as I want my collectors to truly have one-of-a-kind pieces. If there's a piece I've done before that you want, tell me about what you like about it and we can work out something similar for you.

A Note on Copyrights

As the artist, I reserve the rights to all my work. Reproduction of my artwork without permission is prohibited. The original painting belongs to you but I may use the image of my artwork at my discretion (eg, calendars, notecards, social media.)

General Pricing

The way I decide my prices is roughly based on how large a piece is. This is a common pricing practice among artists. My rate for 2024 is $2.75 CAD/square inch. The rate for a multi-panel piece is slightly higher, as there are more edges to paint and lining up the panels requires additional time and care. Typically, as an artist's repertoire, experience, and reputation grows, the rate will increase. (For reference, I recently read of one artist who has been gallery represented for 14 years who charges $6/square inch.)

Included in the price of your one-of-a-kind piece of art are the materials, my time, energy, and 25+ years of skill development as well as hidden work, including preparing the canvas with gesso (priming), image research, concept development, varnishing (finishing) the canvas, and installing hanging hardware.

In general, I request a 50% deposit when I begin your project and the balance when you receive your painting. For large projects, we can discuss an installment payment plan. Depending on the size of your project, or if you require a custom sized canvas, I may also need to add a supplies fee. I can also help you frame your piece for a fee. Shipping is not included but if you're in the Lower Mainland Vancouver area, we can arrange for pickup.
