I don’t know about you, but to me September always feels like the beginning of the last portion of a year. As the weather turns cooler and the sun sets earlier, I am reminded that autumn is on its way. The painting for this month reflects that shift in seasons.
The story behind the painting for this month, “September’s Fading Light” is not a particularly deep one, but there is a story nonetheless. Last year as I started posting more sky paintings, various friends and family members would send me photos of the sky they’d taken. The reference image for this painting was based on one such photo, sent to me by my friend, Maddie Davis.
I was drawn in by the colours and the way the clouds reflected the light, seemingly dancing in the sky. I wanted to try painting it because I’d never done this type of sky before. I ended up attempting it twice because the first time around, I wasn’t able to capture the subtlety as much as I had wanted to. This painting was the second try.
As with some of my other work, this painting was created on a repurposed canvas that one of my children had previously painted on. So if you look closely, you can see some of the texture showing through.
I paired the painting this month with a verse from Psalm 57:3, which says, “God sends forth his love and his faithfulness.” It’s comforting to me to be reminded that God actively sends his love and faithfulness. That God is the initiator. We do not need to grasp, get, or earn his love. We need only to recieve.
Questions for reflection, if you want to go deeper: Which part of this painting draws you in? Where do you find God’s love and faithfulness in your life today? As the seasons change, where do you need to feel God’s love and faithfulness?
I’m currently working on putting together next year’s Art Calendars which will be offered via my website. Those on my “First to Know” email list will be notified when pre-orders are open!
As always, I love to hear from you! If something in this story resonated with you, if you’re interested in commissioning a painting, or if you have other thoughts, feel free to email, or connect with me on Facebook or Instagram. Thanks for being part of my journey and for letting me be a part of yours!
